Polish validation of the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS battery): correlation of cognitive impairment with mood disorders and fatigue

Background: Cognitive impairment is recognised as a significant clinical issue in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It can occur at any stage of the disease, affecting quality life, occupational activity, and adherence to therapy. This makes availability validated assessment tool for detecting monitoring cognitive dysfunction multiple sclerosis essential. The Brief International Assessment practical simple means administering battery three neuropsychological tests, does not require formal training. Objective: To establish validity BICAMS Polish MS population; assess correlations status with demographic factors, including affective symptoms fatigue. Methods: was administered 61 patients HC subjects. Examination 20 participants repeated after one weeks test-retest reliability. subjects also completed Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) Modified Fatigue Impact (MFIS). Results: group performed worse than all components, obtaining following values respectively: 51.7 56.1 (p = 0.02) CVLT, 25 28 0.03) BVMT-R, 48.8 57.2 < 0.001) SDMT. All tests had very reliability (r 0.83, p 0.001 CVLT; r 0.84, BVMTR; 0.9, SDMT). 34% presented based on criterion or more test scores below 5th percentile value group. Significant anxiety depressive were reported by 31.1% 18.0% patients. PwMS results associated HADS MFIS scores. Conclusions: version valid reliable MS.
